Rock Climbing Performance Assessment

A rock climbing performance assessment is an instrumental tool to learn how you perform the underlying fundamentals of climbing. Climbing requires known and identifiable skills to achieve mastery. This is particularly true if you are pursuing certain grades or projects - a sequence of moves will require a unique configuration of strength, flexibility, balance, etc. It can be challenging to self-identify the specific barrier that limits you from redpointing a climb or finding the sequence of moves required to climb cleanly through a crux. A climbing performance assessment clarifies your individual climbing toolkit and objectively identifies performance limiters. This assessment integrates data from climbing specific studies and populations, correlating testing in various domains (finger strength, endurance, power, etc.) to ability in redpointing various climbing grades. With comprehensive testing, this allows us to identify the domain that is limiting your climbing and holding you back from the freedom of movement that should embody your climbing experience.
Additional reasons to complete a climbing performance assessment include establishing a baseline for future reference, directing training to inform efficient use of your nonclimbing time, and injury prevention. Future reassessment will guide how you spend your time on the wall for best performance and mastery.
A comprehensive climbing assessment captures multiple domains of performance, while a partial assessment captures one domain only. Domains include:
- Strength
- Power
- Endurance
- Mobility
- Control
If you are seeking a full assessment to improve your climbing, the full individual performance assessment is the best fit for you. If you strongly suspect that one domain is the performance limiter, consider scheduling a partial assessment to investigate one domain. This assessment is developed by Jared Vagy, PT, DPT.
