ACL Prevention 101

Are you a young athlete or parent of an adolescent athlete worried about ACL injuries? If so, this post is for you. Did you know that there are about 250,000 ACL injuries annually in the US and the cost of an ACL rupture including surgery and rehabilitation is $17,000 to $25,000 per injury? Most injuries, ~57%, are actually noncontact injuries that occur during cutting on a planted foot.

Due to these staggering statistics more research has been done to work on strategies to prevent ACL tears. At this time, the evidence points toward preseason and inseason training, as the injury reduction effects only last 6 months. A program should include proprioceptive and neuromuscular training 2 times a week for at least 20 minutes and last at least 6 weeks.

If you’re curious about setting up a program for yourself, your adolescent athlete or team please reach out to Mariah Miller, PT, DPT at Bridgetown Physical Therapy and Training Studio.
